The Head of Government presides over the first meeting of the ministerial committee tasked with monitoring the repercussions of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East on the national economy
The Head of Government, Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, presided over the first meeting of the ministerial committee tasked with monitoring the repercussions of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East on the national economy, on Monday, March 30, 2026, in Rabat. During this meeting, the various departments presented reports on the scenarios of this crisis's repercussions on the national economy and the means to protect citizens' purchasing power against its potential effects, particularly given the persistent state of uncertainty the world is experiencing.
During the proceedings of this committee, which will meet periodically and whenever necessary to take appropriate measures according to international developments and to protect citizens' purchasing power, it was decided to continue subsidizing butane gas. The prices of the latter have experienced an increase of over 68% on the international market since the outbreak of the crisis at the beginning of this current month of March, without affecting the current price of a butane gas cylinder. Support for electricity bill prices will also be maintained in order to keep the same pricing.
In light of the sharp rise in petroleum products on international markets and its impact on the national market, the direct and exceptional support intended for professionals in the road transport sector for goods and passengers will be disbursed. This support, which covers the period from the current March 15 to the upcoming April 15, will take place after the completion of the review of applications received via the electronic platform https://mouakaba.transport.gov.ma, which have exceeded 87,000 requests.
Similar to the operation approved by the government in 2022, the categories benefiting from this exceptional government support include: public passenger transport, mixed transport in rural areas, third-party freight transport, third-party personnel transport, third-party school transport, tourist transport, tow trucks, first and second category taxis (grand and petit taxis), as well as urban transport buses.
This government measure aims to ensure the normal and regular supply of markets, and to ensure the continuity of public transport services at the same rates, without any increase for citizens. Care will also be taken to ensure the commitment of the benefiting professionals to apply the same current rates for the transport of people and goods.
The following took part in this meeting: the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Economy and Finance, the Minister of Equipment and Water, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Delegate Minister in charge of Investment, Convergence and the Evaluation of Public Policies, the Delegate Minister in charge of the Budget, the Delegate Minister in charge of Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesperson, as well as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, and the Director General of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).
